Phantom Blade Zero Combat Guide: Sha-Chi, Parry & Ghoststep
Here's how the combat works, or at least how it looks from the previews. Sha-Chi is the engine: you spend it to attack, refill it by defending well, and break enemies open when their own bar empties. It plays faster and more aggressive than the trailers suggest.

Enemies have Sha-Chi too. Empty their bar and they stagger — that's your window.
The core loop
One resource, two jobs. Sha-Chi powers both your offense and your defense, and the enemy plays the same game. Spend it to break their stance; guard and dodge well to refill yours.
| Action | Sha-Chi cost | Payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Normal combo | None | Free damage; chips at the enemy meter |
| Sha-Chi combo | Consumes Sha-Chi | Harder hits and a heavier enemy drain |
| Perfect guard / perfect dodge | None | Sha-Chi refund + Ghoststep counter |
| Weapon switch (left d-pad) | Refills fully | Fresh resource; slot on cooldown |

Offense
Two attack routes: free normal combos and Sha-Chi combos that hit harder and drain the enemy meter faster. Spending too aggressively leaves you exposed — a player with an empty bar breaks just like an enemy. Switch weapons to refill, or play safe and let perfect guards rebuild the meter. If you're coming from Sekiro, the pacing is the opposite: you push forward instead of waiting for openings.

Sha-Chi combos and guards also fill a second meter. Full segments stack into charges, and one charge powers an L2 Ultimate with invincibility frames and heavy damage.
Defense
- Guard (L1) — holding it drains Sha-Chi, and blocking costs extra.
- Perfect guard — timed right before a hit, it costs nothing and sends you behind the enemy for a counter.
- Dodge (R1) — free movement, backstep or directional.
- Perfect dodge — triggers the same Ghoststep counter.
- Blue vs red attacks — blue is guardable, red is dodge-only.
If you've played Sekiro, the parry timing will probably feel familiar — the difference is that this game wants you to stay aggressive instead of standing your ground.

Phantom Armaments & items
The secondary slot runs on its own resource — ammo refilled at bells in the world, separate from Sha-Chi. Previews show a bow, a giant axe, a flame lion head, an ink-blood weapon and a cannon-style option for crowd control. Item flasks sit on the d-pad: one for healing, one for the alternate effect.

Where this comes from
Most of this comes from long preview sessions and hands-on footage floating around the internet, with PS5 button labels. We'll rebuild this page with our own play after Oct 29.

Combat questions
How do you parry in Phantom Blade Zero?
Holding guard (L1) drains Sha-Chi, and blocking an attack costs extra. A perfectly timed guard costs nothing, refunds Sha-Chi, and sends you behind the enemy for a counter — that's the move you'll want to practice.
What do the red and blue enemy attacks mean?
Blue-cued attacks are guardable; red-cued attacks are dodge-only. Perfect dodges trigger the same Ghoststep counter as a perfect guard.
How do you restore Sha-Chi?
Switch primary weapons (left d-pad) to refill it, on a cooldown. Perfect guards and dodges also refund a chunk, so playing clean pays off.
What are Phantom Armaments?
Secondary weapons with their own ammo, refilled at bells in the world. So far: a bow, a giant axe, a flame lion head and an ink-blood weapon.
How do you trigger an execution?
Empty an enemy's Sha-Chi bar and they stagger; a triangle prompt appears. Each weapon has its own execution.
Is there a training room to practice parry timing?
No dedicated training room announced. Demo footage shows tutorial-style teaching, so expect to learn parry timing in the opening area.
