Soulslike?

Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike? (Answered)

Not really. It borrows parry-focused ideas from Souls games, but the combat flow is character action — aggressive, weapon-swapping, and built around the Sha-Chi meter.

The short answer

Not really. S-GAME says so, and the combat backs it up. It borrows some ideas from Souls games — parry windows, punishing bosses, death-and-retry — but the flow is much closer to character action. You push forward and switch weapons mid-combo instead of waiting for openings.

Where it feels like a soulslike

  • Parry windows, color-coded enemy attacks and punish timing (closest comparison: Sekiro).
  • Boss encounters with phases and dramatic telegraphs.
  • Death-and-retry pressure, softened by mid-fight boss checkpoints.

Where it does not

  • Sha-Chi management instead of stamina; weapon swap restores the meter.
  • Two Blades + two Phantom Edges equipped at once — a loadout system.
  • Four adjustable difficulty modes and NG+ options (Wayfarer / Gamechanger / Hellwalker).
  • Director quotes compare the flow to Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, not Dark Souls.

Soulslike questions

Is Phantom Blade Zero like Sekiro?

Combat is fast and parry-focused like Sekiro, but PBZ adds weapon switching, Sha-Chi management and four adjustable difficulty modes.

Is it harder than Dark Souls?

S-GAME includes four adjustable difficulty modes and mid-fight boss checkpoints, which take the edge off the usual souls-like frustration.

How does it compare to Black Myth Wukong?

Both are Chinese action RPGs with cinematic bosses. PBZ leans harder into parry/Ghoststep defense and weapon-swap combos.

Can I change difficulty mid-game?

Not confirmed. The reported modes are Wayfarer, Gamechanger and Hellwalker; S-GAME has not said whether a save can switch between them. That gets tested day one.
